Green Country Habitat for Humanity has expanded Education Begins With Home beyond Tulsa Public Schools to qualifying classroom educators at Union Public Schools and seven participating Tulsa-area charter schools.
According to Habitat's official program page, qualifying participants may receive up to $50,000 in forgivable down-payment assistance, access a below-market 30-year fixed-rate mortgage, purchase a newly constructed energy-efficient starter home, and receive financial counseling and homebuyer preparation. Assistance, mortgage access, and home availability are subject to program requirements and available funding.
The expanded classroom educator group includes traditionally certified, alternatively certified, emergency-certified, and non-certified teachers. Participating charter schools are Tulsa Legacy Charter School, KIPP Tulsa, Tulsa School of Arts and Sciences, College Bound Academy, Tulsa Honor Academy, Under the Canopy School, and Crossover Preparatory Academy.
Habitat says the down-payment assistance is forgiven after five years of successful mortgage payments. Union's official announcement says applicants generally must not have owned a home in the prior three years and must have a credit score of at least 600. Additional eligibility requirements apply, and Habitat should make the final eligibility determination.
Habitat's current page describes the expanded program as serving eligible classroom educators. Union's announcement uses broader language for some non-certified employees, while Habitat says other school employees may be eligible for its traditional homebuyer program. Anyone outside a classroom educator role should confirm the correct program directly with Habitat.
The first step is a free virtual or in-person information session. Habitat's current schedule shows session length can vary by day, and Habitat says submitting an interest form or registering for a session does not affect credit.
